CAULDRON ICE CREAM IN SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA
When I drove from San Francisco to San Diego, I knew I had to make a stop at Cauldron Ice Cream along the way! The latest and greatest ice cream phenomenon to hit social media, this place has been bookmarked on my Yelp page for far too long. You guys already know what a sucker I am for rose shaped ice cream, so I couldn't resist taking a little detour to try them out. Spoiler alert: it was totally worth every minute of traffic to get here!
I was instantly attracted by their world famous Puffle Cones filled with the most unique of ice cream concoctions on their trendy Instagram page. Puffle cones are a modern take on the egg waffle -- they are made from a sweet, egg-based batter that, when cooked, puff up to form little airy pockets that resemble bubble wrap (and who doesn't love bubble wrap?!). The folks at Cauldron Ice Cream recreated this popular Hong Kong street snack, shaping it into a cone and loading it up with a variety of flavors from their rotating menu. When I visited, they had their classic puffle cone as well as a seasonal red velvet puffle cone. Both were perfectly fluffy and flavorful, but the red velvet cone was BOMB.
Moving on to the ice cream. Handcrafted in small batches using liquid nitrogen, their delicious ice cream is aromatic and flavorful with a dense and creamy texture so smooth you won't be able to put down your spoon! I mean, this stuff is pretty heavenly. And with the assortment of innovative flavors, it was so hard to choose just one!
The staff was beyond friendly and even offered to re-freeze the top of my ice cream rose after I took photos for 15 minutes! I often feel self-conscious when I take photos of my food (and avoid eye contact with basically everyone at all costs), but these guys were downright amazing.
Too bad I don't live in the area -- I'd be frequenting here on-the-reg!
Sweet Tip
Not sure what to order? I devoured The Cauldron (cinnamon vanilla ice cream w/ Oreo and Thin Mint cookies) in a red velvet puffle cone & shared the S'mores (chocolate ice cream w/ graham cracker crumbs and torched marshmallow fluff) in a classic puffle cone.
